Garden City is a city in Wayne County in the southeast of the US -amerikanischen State of Michigan of and part of Metro Detroit called metropolitan area around Detroit .

Garden City had 30,047 residents in 2000; up to the official estimate, the population has decreased to 26,142.

Garden City lies at 42 ° 19'32 "north latitude and 83 ° 19'52" west longitude and extends over 15.28 km², which consists exclusively of land.

Garden City is a western suburb of Detroit and around 25 km from downtown Detroit.

The M-153 runs through Garden City and runs west from Detroit.

Neighboring cities are Westland (5.7 km west), Livonia (6.5 km north), Dearborn Heights (6.1 km east), Inkster (5.2 km southeast), and Wayne (9 km southwest).

The Detroit Airport is located about 15 km south of Garden City.

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 , a population of 30,047 was determined. These were distributed over 11,479 households in 8,230 families. The population density was 1966.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 11,719 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 766.9 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 96.2 percent white , 1.1 percent African American , 0.4 percent Native American , 0.7 percent Asian, and 0.3 percent other. 1.3 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 2.0 percent of the population were Hispanics who belonged to any of the named groups.

25.1 percent were under 18 years of age, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24, 32.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.5 percent 65 and older. The mean age was 36 years. Statistically, there were 97.4 men for every 100 women, 95.5 among those over 18.

The median income per household was 51,841  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 58,530 USD. The median income for men was $ 44,314 and that for women was $ 27,904. The per capita income was $ 21,651. Around 3.3 percent of families and 4.5 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
