Hamtramck is a city in Wayne County in the southeast of the US -amerikanischen State of Michigan of and part of Metro Detroit called metropolitan area around Detroit .

In 2000 Hamtramck had 22,976 inhabitants. By 2009 the number of residents had decreased to 20,062.

Hamtramck is surrounded by the city of Detroit, except for a small portion of the western border. Part of the city limits runs alongside the city of Highland Park . Hamtramck was named after the French-Canadian soldier Jean François Hamtramck , the first American commanding officer of the fortress in Detroit, Fort Shelby .

Hamtramck was originally settled by German farmers. After the Dodge Brothers factory opened in 1914, many Polish immigrants moved to the area. Large numbers of immigrants have also moved to the city over the past thirty years . According to the 2000 census, the proportion of the foreign-born population was 41.1%. In 2013 Hamtramck became the first community in the United States where Muslims make up the majority of the population. The Muslim residents, mainly from Yemen , Bangladesh , Pakistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina , have made up the majority of Hamtramck's residents since 2013 and are an important reason for the revitalization of the city. Since the local elections in November 2015, four of the six members of the City Council have been Muslim, which has sparked controversy in the community and earned the city nationwide attention.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a land area of ​​5.46 km². Hamtramck is surrounded on all sides by Detroit, except for a small shared border with the city of Highland Park, which in turn is surrounded by Detroit. Hamtramck is about five miles from downtown Detroit. The Interstate 75 runs along the west limit, the Interstate 94 runs in the vicinity of the southern border.

Culture

Hamtramck flourished between 1910 and 1920 when thousands of European immigrants , mostly Polish, were attracted by the growing automotive industry . The city still bears many memories of Polish ancestry in family names , street names and companies. According to a recent survey, 26 mother tongues are spoken by students in Hamtramck. The city's motto was: "A league of nations".

At the time of the 2000 census , Hamtramck was experiencing significant growth. Almost 23,000 inhabitants in more than 8,000 households were counted. Polish immigrants celebrate Pączki Day (Violet Tuesday), during which pączki can be bought from the numerous Polish bakers . On Pączki Day, bars have parties with live entertainment, some starting at 7:00 a.m.

The Hamtramck Blowout is an annual music festival and one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world. It lasts four days and there are usually over 200 bands playing.

At the time of the last official census in 2000, there were 22,976 people in 8,033 households and 4,851 families in the city. The population density was 4208.7 per km², making it the most densely populated city in Michigan. There were 8,894 housing units at an average density of 1,629.2 per km².

Of the 8,033 households in which 33.3% of the cases were children under the age of 18, 37.3% were married and living together, 16.1% had a female head of the household without a husband and 39.6% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.59.

27.8% of the population was under 18 years old, 10.8% 18 to 24 years old, 31.9% 25 to 44 years old, 17.7% 45 to 64 years old, and 11.9% was 65 years or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 110.4 males. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 109.6 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 26,616, and the median income for a family is $ 30,496. Males had a median income of $ 29,368 versus $ 22,346 for women. The city's per capita income was $ 12,691. Over 24.1% of families and 27.0% of the population were below the poverty line , of whom 36.9% were under 18 years of age and 18.1% were in the age group 65 years or older.
