Taylor is a city in Wayne County , Michigan in the United States . In 2000, 65,868 people lived in Taylor. Taylor was 17th in Michigan. Taylor was originally a township , but in May 1968 the citizens decided to incorporate it as a city .

The name of the Taylor Township goes back to Zachary Taylor , who was sworn in as the twelfth President of the United States in 1849 . The township was separated from Ecorse Township on March 16, 1847 .

Taylor's geographic coordinates be 42 ° 14 '  N , 83 ° 16'  W . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​61.2 km 2 , with no significant body of water. However, there are a few smaller lakes in the city's parks and on the grounds of the Lakes of Tyler Golf Club.

The place is south of Interstate 94 and west of Interstate 75 , both of which lead to Detroit , to whose catchment area the city belongs. The US Highway 24 leads as Telegraph Road in North-south through the city. A Norfolk and Western Railway line runs along the northern outskirts.

Taylor's population was 86.13% White , 8.75% Black or African American , 0.68% Native American , 1.63% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 0.75% said other races belong to and 2.04% named two or more races. 3.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Taylor distributed to 24,776 households out of which 34.9% were living in children under 18 years. 48.7% of households were married, 17.4% had a female head of the household without a husband and 28.4% did not form families. 23.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 7.6% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.09.

The population was divided into 27.2% minors, 9.3% 18–24 year olds, 31.0% 25–44 year olds, 21.5% 45–64 year olds and 11.0% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 93.2 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 89.3 men.

The median household income in Taylor was 42,944 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 48,304 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 41,170, versus $ 41 for women. The per capita income was $ 19,638. 10.8% of the population and 8.9% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 16.3% of minors and 6.5% of those aged 65 and over.

"Green" city

The metropolitan area has over 300 acres of land, including a historic village, fish pond, and virgin forest between Heritage Park and Wayne County Community College. For nineteen years in a row, the city was named Tree City USA . Taylor has been classified as a "Cool City" by the Sierra Club .

The city administration is investigating the possibility of setting up a wind farm in order to produce enough energy to supply the city buildings with electricity. Mayor Cameron G. Priebe was the county's first mayor to sign the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement , an initiative by US local politicians to combat global warming . The city's fleet of vehicles also uses hydrogen, natural gas, and biofuels for propulsion. The carbon dioxide emissions of the city authorities were thus reduced.

In 2006, a filling station for hydrogen-powered vehicles was opened on the Stadtwerke site in cooperation with BP , which is also used by the corresponding vehicles in the neighboring cities of Ann Arbor , the administration of Wayne County Airport and the Ford Motor Company .

A composting plant on Racho Road produces more than 16,000 m 3 of high-quality compost every year , which is given to local citizens and businesses. A non-profit garden near the Heritage Park produces agricultural products for those in need. First offenders are sentenced to charitable services on this floor space.

The traffic lights have been converted to energy-saving LED lights and adapted to the traffic so that fuel consumption and pollutant emissions are reduced.

On US Highway 24 , which runs through Taylor as "Telegraph Road", some innovative transport hubs from the 1950s can be found. The first American tekke ( dervish monastery ) of the Muslim Sufi order of the Bektashi is located in Taylor . It was founded here by chief Baba Rexheb in 1954 after the order had to relocate its world center from Albanian Tirana to Detroit due to the communist dictatorship at the time .
