description
Vegetative characteristics
The Berg-Ehrenpreis is a perennial herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 15 to 45 centimeters. The thin stalk usually grows creeping, at the tip it usually rises with upright branches and roots at the nodes.
The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 7 to 15 millimeters long. The simple leaf blade is round or broadly oval with a length of 20 to 35 millimeters and has a rounded or narrow heart-shaped base. The wrinkled leaf blade is serrate or serrate and frizzy on both sides.
Generative characteristics
The flowering time is mainly in the months of May and June. Two to seven flowers stand together in loose and clearly lateral racemose inflorescences . The filamentous and hairy flower stalks are two to four times as long as the narrow, linear bracts .
The hermaphroditic flowers have a double flower envelope . The corolla has a diameter of about 10 millimeters and is pale purple in color with darker veins.
The ciliate capsule fruit is flat, about 4 to 6 millimeters long, 7 to 8 millimeters wide and constricted at the top and bottom almost like glasses.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 or 36.
Occurrence
The Berg-Ehrenpreis is widespread from Sweden to Central to Southern Europe and North Africa and is also found in northeastern Turkey and Georgia. It is mostly common in Central Europe .
In Germany the Berg-Ehrenpreis is quite common; however, it is absent over larger areas in eastern and northern Germany. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises in the forest on the Toniswand in Obertal in Bavaria to an altitude of 1,300 meters. In Austria Veronica montana occurs scattered; only in Carinthia is it very rare. In Switzerland, the mountain speedwell is only found more frequently in the northern area, while in the south it is absent over long distances.
The Berg-Ehrenpreis grows in beech forest communities, ash and alluvial forests. It thrives best on soaky, mostly nutrient-rich and lime-poor, loamy or clay soils . He is in Central Europe a weak characteristic species of Carici-remotae-Fraxinetum comes, but also in Pruno-Fraxinetum or in damp Fagion companies before.
