The county is located in the east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Canada , separated by the St. Clair River and has an area of ​​2167 square kilometers, of which 291 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

St. Clair County was formed in 1822 from parts of Macomb County. It was named after Arthur St. Clair , the first governor of the Northwest Territory .

Two locations in St. Clair County have National Historic Landmark status , the Huron Lightship and the St. Clair Tunnel . 27 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , St. Clair County had 164,235 people in 62,072 households and 44,629 families. The population density was 88 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.96 percent white, 2.10 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.38 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,313 , and the median income for a family is $ 54,450. Males had a median income of $ 42,572 versus $ 25,880 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,582. 5.8 percent of families and 7.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
