St. Joseph County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Centerville .

The county is located in the southwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Indiana to the south and has an area of 1,350 square kilometers, of which 45 square kilometers are water. In Michigan, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cass County , Kalamazoo County, and Branch Counties .
history
St. Joseph County was established as the original Free Territory county in 1822. It was named after Saint Joseph, the patron saint of New France .

According to the 2000 census , St. Joseph County had 62,422 people in 23,381 households and 16,600 families. The population density was 48 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.49 percent white, 2.58 percent African American, 0.38 percent Native American, 0.58 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.46 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 23,381 households, 34.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, and 29.0 percent were non-families. 23.6 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.09.
27.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 95 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the 40,355 USD , and the median income for a family 46,391 USD. Males had a median income of $ 34,983 versus $ 23,638 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,247. 8.2 percent of families and 11.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
