The Gogebic County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Michigan . In 2010 , the county had 16,427 residents and a population density of 5.8 people per square kilometer. By 2013, the population had decreased to 15,916. The county seat is Bessemer .

The county is located on the southern shore of Lake Superior in the far west of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and borders Wisconsin to the south .
It has an area of 3824 square kilometers, of which 970 square kilometers are water.

Gogebic County was formed in 1887 from parts of Ontonagon County. It was probably named after the Indian word bic , which means rock .
