Benzie County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Beulah .

The county is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordered to the west by Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of ​​2226 square kilometers, of which 1394 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Leelanau County , Grand Traverse County, and Manistee Counties .

history

Benzie County was formed in 1863 from parts of Leelanau County. It was named after a small river in the area, which the former French rulers called Riviere Aux-Bec-Scies .

One construction in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the City of Milwaukee Rail Ferry . Nine buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Benzie County had 15,998 people in 6,500 households and 4,595 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.39 percent white, 0.28 percent African American, 1.59 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.46 percent of the population.

The median income for a household in the 37,350 USD , and the median income for a family 42,716 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,218 versus $ 21,730 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,524. 4.7 percent of families and 7.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
