Barry County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Hastings .

The county is located in the mid-northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is about 60 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of 1,494 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Ionia County , Eaton County , Calhoun County , Kalamazoo County , Allegan County, and Kent Counties .
history
Barry County was formed as the original Free Territory County in 1829. It was named after William T. Barry , a US Postal Secretary. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .
Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Barry County had 56,755 people in 21,035 households and 15,986 families. The population density was 39 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.39 percent white, 0.24 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.46 percent of the population.
Of the 21,035 households, 35.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.1 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers, and 24.0 percent were non-families. 19.5 percent were single households and 7.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.06.
27.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 11.8 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 46,820 USD , and the median income for a family 51,794 USD. Males had a median income of $ 38,991 versus $ 26,387 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,636. 3.9 percent of families and 5.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
