Berrien County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is St. Joseph .

The county is located in the extreme northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Indiana to the south and Lake Michigan , one of the 5 Great Lakes , to the west , and covers an area of 4096 square kilometers, of which 2617 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Van Buren County and Cass County .
history
Berrien County was formed as the original Free Territory county in 1829. It was named after John M. Berrien , a US attorney general. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .

According to the 2000 census , Berrien County's population was 162,453 people in 63,569 households and 43,354 families. The population density was 110 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.69 percent white, 15.93 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 1.14 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.64 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.01 percent of the population.
Of the 63,569 households, 31.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.2 percent were married couples living together, 13.2 percent were single mothers, and 31.8 percent were non-families. 27.1 percent were single households and 10.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.01.
26.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,567 USD , and the median income for a family 46,548 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,582 versus $ 23,800 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,952. 9.3 percent of families and 12.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
