Otsego County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Gaylord .

The county is located in the north of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1,362 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Cheboygan County , Montmorency County , Crawford County , Antrim County, and Charlevoix Counties .

history

Otsego County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Okkudo County. It was named after Otsego County in New York , the former home of many of the first settlers in the area.

Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Otsego County had 23,301 people; 8,995 households and 6,539 families were counted. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.51 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years and over, there were statistically 96.7 men.

The median income for a household in the 40,876 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 46,628. Males had a median income of $ 34,413 versus $ 21,204 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,810. 5.3 percent of families and 6.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
