Chippewa County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Sault Ste. Marie .

The county is located in the far east of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, borders Canada to the northwest , Lake Huron , one of the 5 Great Lakes , to the north, northeast, east, southeast and south , and covers an area of 6,988 square kilometers, of which 2,945 square kilometers Are water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Mackinac Counties and Luce Counties .
history
Chippewa County was formed in 1827 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named after the Chippewa , an Indian tribe.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Soo Locks lock system , also known as St. Mary's Falls Canal . A total of 26 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 22, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Chippewa County had 38,543 people in 13,474 households and 8,960 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.88 percent white, 5.52 percent African American, 13.31 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 4.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,474 households, 30.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, and 33.5 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent were single households and 10.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.93.
21.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 12.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 125.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 132.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,464 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,450. Males had a median income of $ 31,559 versus $ 22,321 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,858. 8.9 percent of families and 12.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
