Alpena County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Alpena .

The county is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , to the east , and has an area of ​​4,390 square kilometers, of which 2,903 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Alcona County , Montmorency County, and Presque Isle County .

history

Alpena County was formed in 1840 as Anamickee County from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , there were 31,314 people in Alpena County. 567 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 12,818 households and 8,690 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.21 percent white, 0.25 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.58 percent of the population.

Of the 12,818 households, 29.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers, and 32.2 percent were non-families. 27.8 percent were single households and 13.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.93 people.

23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.5 men.

The median income for a household in the 34,177 USD , and the median income for a family 42,366 USD. Males had a median income of $ 34,571 versus $ 21,962 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,566. 7.7 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
