Lapeer County is part of Metro Detroit , the metropolitan area around the city of Detroit .

The county is located in the southeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 45 km to the northeast from Lake Huron , one of the Great Lakes , and has an area of 1717 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Lapeer County was formed in 1822 from parts of Oakland County and St. Clair County. It was named after the French name La Pierre .

As of the 2000 census , Lapeer County had 87,904 people in 30,729 households and 23,876 families. The population density was 52 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.17 percent white, 0.82 percent African American, 0.38 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.07 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 3.11 percent of the population.
Of the 30,729 households, 38.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 65.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, and 22.3 percent were non-families. 18.5 percent were single households and 6.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.19.
28.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 31.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 9.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. Statistically, there were 102.4 males for every 100 females. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 101.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 51,717 , and the median income for a family is $ 57,817. Males had a median income of $ 47,506 versus $ 26,385 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,462. 3.8 percent of families and 5.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
