Lake County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Baldwin .

The county is located in the mid-northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 45 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of 1,488 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Wexford County , Osceola County , Newaygo County , Mason County, and Manistee Counties .
history
Lake County was formed from parts of Mackinac County in 1840. Until 1843 it was called Aischum County . It was named after the occurrence of many small lakes in the area.
Four buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 30, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Lake County had 11,333 people in 4,704 households and 3,052 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.66 percent white, 11.17 percent African American, 1.01 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.57 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.40 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.69 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,704 households, 23.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, and 35.1 percent were non-families. 29.6 percent were single households and 13.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
21.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 19.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 109.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 107.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 26,622 USD , and the median income for a family 32,086 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,124 versus $ 21,886 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,457. 14.7 percent of families and 19.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
