Charlevoix County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Charlevoix .

The county is located almost in the far north of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Michigan , one of the 5 Great Lakes , to the east and has an area of ​​3602 square kilometers, of which 2522 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Emmet County , Cheboygan County , Otsego County , Antrim County and, on Lake Michigan, Leelanau County , Schoolcraft County and Mackinac County .

history

Charlevoix County was formed in 1869 from parts of Antrim County, Emmet County, and Otsego County. It was named after Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix , a French Jesuit missionary.

A total of 24 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 22, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Charlevoix County had 26,090 people in 10,400 households and 7,311 families. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.31 percent white, 0.17 percent African American, 1.54 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.41 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.8 men.

The median income for a household in the 39,788 USD , and the median income for a family 46,260 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,457 versus $ 22,447 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,130. 5.4 percent of families and 8.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
