Missaukee County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Lake City .

The county is located in the north-central part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1,486 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kalkaska County , Roscommon County , Clare County , Osceola County, and Wexford County .

history

Missaukee County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named after Missaukee , a chief of the Ottawa .

Three of the county's sites are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Missaukee County had 14,478 people in 5,450 households and 4,043 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.50 percent white, 0.20 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.17 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
