Arenac County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Standish .

The county is located in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordering Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , to the east , and has an area of 1763 square kilometers, of which 813 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Iosco County , Bay County , Gladwin County, and Ogemaw County .
history
Arenac County was established as the original Free Territory county in 1831. In 1857 it went up in Bay County and became independent again in 1883. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.
Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Arenac County had 17,269 people in 6,710 households and 4,717 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.38 percent white, 1.82 percent African American, 0.95 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.33 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.38 percent of the population.
Of the 6,710 households, 29.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers, and 29.7 percent were non-families. 25.5 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
23.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 16.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 105.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years and over there were 104.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,805 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,033. Males had a median income of $ 31,205 versus $ 20,363 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,300. 11.3 percent of families and 13.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
