Kalkaska County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Kalkaska .

The county is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,478 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Crawford County , Missaukee County , Grand Traverse County, and Antrim County .
history
Kalkaska County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Wabassee County . Just like the district capital, it was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.

According to the 2000 census , Kalkaska County had 16,571 people in 6,428 households and 4,634 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer . The racial the population was composed of 97.54 percent white, 0.21 percent African American, 0.78 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.10 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.86 percent of the population.
Of the 6,428 households, 31.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 22.3 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.95.
25.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 101.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 36,072 USD , and the median income for a family 39,932 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,860 versus $ 20,455 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,309. 8.2 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
