Emmet County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Petoskey .

The county is located in the far north of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordering Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , to the west and has an area of 2285 square kilometers, of which 1073 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cheboygan County , Charlevoix County and on Lake Michigan by Mackinac County .
history
Emmet County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named after the Irish patriot Robert Emmet .
Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , Ernest Hemingway Cottage , where Ernest Hemingway spent part of his youth, and Bay View , which dates back to the Camp Meetings religious revival movement . 51 buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 23, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Emmet County had 31,437 people in 12,577 households and 8,527 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.33 percent white, 0.47 percent African American, 3.11 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.47 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,577 households, 31.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, and 32.2 percent were non-families. 26.9 percent were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 93.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 40,222 USD , and the median income for a family 48,140 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,385 versus $ 24,173 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,070. 4.5 percent of families and 7.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
