Genesee County is a county in the US state of Michigan . The county seat is Flint .

The county is located in the east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1682 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Genesee County was formed in 1835 from parts of Lapeer, Saginaw Counties and Shiawassee Counties. It was named after Genesee County in New York , the former home of the first settlers in the area.

The word Genesee comes from the language of the Seneca people and means something like beautiful valley .

One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the former Durant-Dort Carriage Company Office , from which William Durant ran his business. A total of 68 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 23, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Genesee County had 436,141 people in 169,825 households and 115,990 families. The population density was 263 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.29 percent white, 20.37 percent African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 0.81 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.78 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.18 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.33 percent of the population.

Of the 169,825 households, 33.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.4 percent were married couples living together, 16.3 percent were single mothers, and 31.7 percent were non-families. 26.6 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.07.

27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age and 11.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 88.5 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,951 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,090. Males had a median income of $ 44,255 versus $ 27,418 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,883. 10.2 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
