Burton is a city in genesis County in the US -amerikanischen State Michigan and a suburb of Flint (Michigan) . The city had 30,308 residents according to the 2000 census, making it the second largest city in Genesee County.

history

The first white settler in the area is Levi Gilkey , who acquired and settled on May 11, 1831, land near the mouth of Gilkey Creek (now part of Flint). In 1833, Burton became part of Grand Blanc Township. Many of Burton's original settlers were from the towns of Adams and Henderson in Jefferson County , New York. For many years the place was known as Atherton, named after the Schubael and Perus brothers Atherton, who settled at Thread Creek in 1835 .

The town was originally organized as Burton Township , named after John Burton, a prominent local farmer. Burton Township was initially part of Grand Blanc Township , which then became Flint Township in 1836 . The northern part of Burton was part of Kearsley Township along with the southern part of Genesee Township from 1839 to 1843, when the parish was again incorporated into Flint Township .

When Flint was registered as a city, the Burton Township was separated from Flint Township by resolution of the Genesee County Council on October 12, 1855 . The first meeting of the municipal council did not take place until April 7, 1856. The date is sometimes considered to be the founding date of the city. Over the years, large parts of the northern and western sides of the parish have been assigned to the town of Flint. Township residents voted for registration on May 16, 1972, and the City of Burton was incorporated on July 1, 1972.
