Burton is a city in genesis County in the US -amerikanischen State Michigan and a suburb of Flint (Michigan) . The city had 30,308 residents according to the 2000 census, making it the second largest city in Genesee County.
history
The first white settler in the area is Levi Gilkey , who acquired and settled on May 11, 1831, land near the mouth of Gilkey Creek (now part of Flint). In 1833, Burton became part of Grand Blanc Township. Many of Burton's original settlers were from the towns of Adams and Henderson in Jefferson County , New York. For many years the place was known as Atherton, named after the Schubael and Perus brothers Atherton, who settled at Thread Creek in 1835 .
The town was originally organized as Burton Township , named after John Burton, a prominent local farmer. Burton Township was initially part of Grand Blanc Township , which then became Flint Township in 1836 . The northern part of Burton was part of Kearsley Township along with the southern part of Genesee Township from 1839 to 1843, when the parish was again incorporated into Flint Township .
When Flint was registered as a city, the Burton Township was separated from Flint Township by resolution of the Genesee County Council on October 12, 1855 . The first meeting of the municipal council did not take place until April 7, 1856. The date is sometimes considered to be the founding date of the city. Over the years, large parts of the northern and western sides of the parish have been assigned to the town of Flint. Township residents voted for registration on May 16, 1972, and the City of Burton was incorporated on July 1, 1972.

According to the 2000 census , the city had 30,308 people in 11,699 households and 8,165 families. The population density was 498.6 / km 2 . There were 12,348 residential units with an average building density of 203.1 / km 2 .
In the 11,699 households, children under the age of 18 lived in 35.0% of cases. 51.8% lived together as married couples, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were single households and 9.0% had people who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.08 people.
27.4% of the city's population was under 18 years old, 8.4% were 18 to 24 old, 32.0% were 25 to 44 old, 21.0% was 45 to 64 old, and 11.2% was 65 Years or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 92.7 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 44,050, and the median income for a family is $ 50,332. Males had a median income of $ 41,433 versus $ 27,601 for women. The per capita income for the city was $ 20,548. About 5.5% of families and 8.7% of the population are below the poverty line , of which 8.6% are young people under the age of 18; 9.5% belonged to the age group 65 years or older.
