Alcona County is a county in the US state of Michigan . The county seat is Harrisville .

The county is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , to the east , and has an area of ​​4637 square kilometers, of which 2891 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Iosco County , Oscoda County, and Alpena County . Belonging is the Hubbard Lake .

history

Alcona County was formed as the original Free Territory County. From 1840 to 1843, the boundaries were set as Negwegon County , but the area was not administered. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language. An independent administration was only set up in 1869, before the area was co-administered by neighboring counties.

One of the county's structures is on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017), the Sturgeon Point Light Station .
