Alcona County is a county in the US state of Michigan . The county seat is Harrisville .

The county is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , to the east , and has an area of 4637 square kilometers, of which 2891 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Iosco County , Oscoda County, and Alpena County . Belonging is the Hubbard Lake .
history
Alcona County was formed as the original Free Territory County. From 1840 to 1843, the boundaries were set as Negwegon County , but the area was not administered. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language. An independent administration was only set up in 1869, before the area was co-administered by neighboring counties.
One of the county's structures is on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017), the Sturgeon Point Light Station .

As of the 2000 census , Alcona County's population was 11,719. 199 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,132 households and 3,566 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.04 percent white, 0.16 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.69 percent of the population.
Of the 5,132 households, 20.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 5.8 percent were single mothers, and 30.5 percent were non-families. 26.6 percent were single households and 14.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.67.
19.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 4.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 20.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 31.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 24.5 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 102.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 99.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,362 USD , and the median income for a family 35,669 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,712 versus $ 20,566 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,653. 9.1 percent of families and 12.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
