Roscommon County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Roscommon .

The county is located in the north-central part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,502 square kilometers, of which 151 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Crawford County , Ogemaw County , Gladwin County , Clare County, and Missaukee Counties .
history
Roscommon County was formed from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory in 1840. It was named after County Roscommon in Ireland .
One building in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018), the Eggleston School .

As of the 2000 census , Roscommon County had 25,469 people in 11,250 households and 7,616 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.99 percent white, 0.32 percent African American, 0.64 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.72 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80 percent of the population.
Of the 11,250 households, 21.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers, and 32.3 percent were non-families. 28.1 percent were single households and 14.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.69 people.
20.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 21.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 29.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 23.8 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,029 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,757. Males had a median income of $ 31,878 versus $ 20,549 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,837. 8.6 percent of families and 12.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
