The county is located south of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1,503 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clinton County , Eaton County , Barry County , Kent County, and Montcalm Counties .

history

Ionia County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named after Ionia , an ancient landscape on the west coast of Asia Minor, today's Turkey.

As of the 2000 census , Ionia County had 61,518 people in 20,606 households and 15,145 families. The population density was 41 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.96 percent white, 4.56 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.01 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.04 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
