Ionia County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Ionia .

The county is located south of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,503 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clinton County , Eaton County , Barry County , Kent County, and Montcalm Counties .

history

Ionia County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named after Ionia , an ancient landscape on the west coast of Asia Minor, today's Turkey.

As of the 2000 census , Ionia County had 61,518 people in 20,606 households and 15,145 families. The population density was 41 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.96 percent white, 4.56 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.01 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.04 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 20,606 households, 38.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, and 26.5 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.15.

26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 31.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 115.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 120.4 men.

The median income for a household in the 43,074 USD , and the median income for a family 49,797 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,995 versus $ 25,443 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,451. 6.8 percent of families and 8.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
