Tuscola County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Caro .

The county is located in the east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders in the northwest on a branch of Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of 2367 square kilometers, of which 263 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Huron County , Sanilac County , Lapeer County , Genesee County , Saginaw County, and Bay County .
history
Tuscola County was formed in 1840 from parts of Sanilac County. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.

As of the 2000 census , Tuscola County had 58,266 people in 21,454 households and 15,983 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.05 percent white, 1.07 percent African American, 0.57 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.72 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.26 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.30 percent of the population.
Of the 21,454 households, 34.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, and 25.5 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.07.
26.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 12.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 40,174 USD , and the median income for a family 46,729 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,974 versus $ 24,241 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,985. 5.4 percent of families and 8.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
