Eaton County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Charlotte .

The county is located in the south-central part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1,500 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Clinton County , Ingham County , Jackson County , Calhoun County , Barry County, and Ionia County .

history

Eaton County was formed as the original Free Territory county in 1829. It was named after John Henry Eaton , a US Secretary of War. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .

A total of 17 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 23, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Eaton County had 103,655 people. Of these, 1,734 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 40,167 households and 28,237 families. The population density was 69 inhabitants per square kilometer. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.5 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 49,588 , and the median income for a family is $ 57,898. Males had a median income of $ 41,978 versus $ 29,638 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,411. 4.1 percent of families and 5.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
