Mason County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Ludington .

The county is located in the west of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of 3216 square kilometers, of which 1934 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Manistee County , Lake County, and Oceana County .
history
Mason County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Notipekago County . It was named after Stevens T. Mason , a Michigan governor.
One place in Macomb County has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Badger Ferry . Eight buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 26, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 28,274 people in 11,406 households and 7,881 families in Mason County as of the reference date. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.84 percent white, 0.73 percent African American, 0.78 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.82 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.53 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.01 percent of the population.
Of the 11,406 households, 29.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, and 30.9 percent were non-families. 26.5 percent were single households and 11.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 16.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 34,704 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,654. Males had a median income of $ 33,873 versus $ 22,616 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,713. 8.2 percent of families and 11.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
