Wexford County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Cadillac .

The county is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 45 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of 1,491 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Grand Traverse County , Missaukee County , Osceola County , Lake County, and Manistee Counties .
Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).
history
Wexford County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Kautawaubert County . It was named after County Wexford in Ireland .

As of the 2000 census , Wexford County had 30,484 people in 11,824 households and 8,383 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.29 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.74 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.01 percent of the population.
Of the 11,824 households, 33.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.3 percent were single mothers, and 29.1 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.00.
26.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 93.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 35,363 USD , and the median income for a family 39,915 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,198 versus $ 21,733 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,144. 7.7 percent of families and 10.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
