Branch County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Coldwater .

The county is located in the south of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordering Indiana and has an area of 1,345 square kilometers, of which 31 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Calhoun County , Hillsdale County, and St. Joseph Counties .
history
Branch County was established as the original Free Territory county in 1829. It was named after John Branch , a US Secretary of War. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .

As of the 2000 census , Branch County had 45,787 people in 16,349 households and 11,575 families. The population density was 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.37 percent white, 2.63 percent African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.98 percent of the population.
Of the 16,349 households, 33.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, and 29.2 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.08.
25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.1 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 102.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 101 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the 38,760 USD , and the median income for a family 44,777 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,098 versus $ 22,579 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,552. 6.0 percent of families and 9.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
