Branch County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Coldwater .

The county is located in the south of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordering Indiana and has an area of ​​1,345 square kilometers, of which 31 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Calhoun County , Hillsdale County, and St. Joseph Counties .

history

Branch County was established as the original Free Territory county in 1829. It was named after John Branch , a US Secretary of War. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .

As of the 2000 census , Branch County had 45,787 people in 16,349 households and 11,575 families. The population density was 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.37 percent white, 2.63 percent African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races.
