The county is located in the mid-northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 55 km to the east from Lake Huron , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of ​​1480 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Montmorency County , Alcona County , Ogemaw County, and Crawford County .

history

Oscoda County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.

According to the 2000 census , Oscoda County had 9,418 people in 3,921 households and 2,717 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.82 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.71 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races.
