The county is located in the mid-northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 55 km to the east from Lake Huron , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of ​​1480 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. Oscoda County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.
