Osceola County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Reed City .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1,484 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Missaukee County , Clare County , Mecosta County , Lake County, and Wexford Counties .

history

Osceola County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Unwattin County. It was named after Osceola , a chief of the Seminoles .

As of the 2000 census , Osceola County had 23,197 people in 8,861 households and 6,415 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.51 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.21 percent were descended from two or more races.
