Houghton County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Houghton .

geography

The northeastern part of the county forms the southwestern part of the Keweenaw Peninsula . The rest of the peninsula is in Keweenaw County .

The county is located in the northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Superior , one of the 5 Great Lakes , to the northwest and northeast , and has an area of ​​3889 square kilometers, of which 1269 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Keweenaw County , Baraga County , Iron County, and Ontonagon Counties .

history

Houghton County was formed in 1845 from parts of Marquette County and Ontonagon County. It was named after Douglass Houghton , a US geologist and mayor of Detroit from 1842 to 1843.

Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Calumet Historic District and the Quincy Mining Company Historic District , both of which are located in the Keweenaw National Historical Park . A total of 41 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 24, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Houghton County had 36,016 people in 13,793 households and 8,137 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.52 percent white, 0.94 percent African American, 0.54 percent Native American, 1.79 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.02 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.70 percent of the population.

Of the 13,793 households, 26.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers, and 41.0 percent were non-families. 32.6 percent were single households and 13.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.04.

21.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 19.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 113.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 115.6 men.

The median income for a household in the 28,817 USD , and the median income for a family 38,635 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,200 versus $ 22,468 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,078. 9.9 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
