Hancock is a small town in Houghton County .

geography

The city is located on the Keweenaw Peninsula . A lifting bridge leads to Houghton, Michigan . The city is snowy because of the lake effect snow .

history

The first buildings were built in the middle of the 19th century. built. The place was named after John Hancock . The smelting of copper ore contributed to the economic development. In 1869 and in the 1940s, a large part of the village was destroyed by fire. City rights were established in 1903. After the Second World War , tourism replaced metallurgy. A town twinning was established with Porvoo .
