Career

Between 1999 and 2001 Helminen first played in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program of the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey in the United States Hockey League and North American Hockey League . In his first year he played 30 games for the U18 team in the NAHL and for the first team in the USHL. He was able to book a total of 29 scorer points and recommended himself for a regular place in the first selection of the association. He received this the following season, when he was only used once in the North American Hockey League and completed 24 games in the United States Hockey League. After twelve points in the previous year, he increased to 19. Following his time in the USA Hockey program, the 18-year-old moved to the University of Michigan for three years in the summer of 2001 . There he began his studies and played at the same time for the university team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his rookie year , he won the CCHA championship with the team, contributing 18 points in 39 games. After his freshman year at college, the center was selected in the eighth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 244 players by the Edmonton Oilers . However, Helminen stayed two more years at Yale, in which he was first elected to the league's all-tournament team in 2003 and repeated the championship win from 2002 a year later. In addition, he was voted the CCHA's best defensive striker in his last year and his transfer rights were given to the New York Rangers on March 3, 2004 together with goalkeeper Stephen Valiquette and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 for Petr Nedvěd and Jussi Markkanen . Overall, he scored 80 points in 119 games over the three seasons at Yale.

For the 2004/05 season Helminen switched to the professional field and was in his first year for the farm teams of the New York Rangers , the Hartford Wolf Pack from the American Hockey League and the Charlotte Checkers from the ECHL , to use. At the Checkers in the ECHL, the defensive striker completed 28 games and with 21 points also knew how to set accents on the offensive. The rookie played 41 times for the Wolf Pack and scored nine points. In the following two seasons up to the summer of 2007 he ran exclusively for Hartford in the AHL. He had his best year in the 2005/06 game year when he scored 55 points and scored an impressive 32 goals. He could not reach these values in the following season with 39 points and 15 goals, whereupon his expiring contract was not extended by the Rangers.

The attacker then accepted a contract offer from JYP Jyväskylä from the Finnish SM-liiga , which was the first time he was active in a European league. In the home of his parents Helminen completed 52 main round and six playoff games in the 2007/08 season , in which he posted a total of 51 points. His younger brother Lars also worked for the Finnish club this season.

In the summer of 2008 Helminen returned to North America after the Carolina Hurricanes had made him a contract offer for a year. This applied to both the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League . First he started the season for the Hurricanes farm team, the Albany River Rats , in the AHL. In the first quarter of the season, the striker was called to the NHL squad and made his debut for Carolina in late October 2008. After being temporarily relegated back to the AHL, he returned to the Hurricanes in March 2009. At the end of the season he came to 23 NHL appearances and 54 in the AHL. While he had scored 30 points for Albany, he was able to score one goal and set up another for Carolina. Before the start of the 2009/10 season , the San Jose Sharks signed the free agent . This put him in the AHL with the Worcester Sharks in the course of the season until February , before he was appointed to the NHL squad San Joses for the first time shortly before the Olympic break.

International

At the international level, Helminen represented the US national team at the 2001 U18 World Junior Championships and the 2002 and 2003 U20 World Junior Championships . He did not achieve a medal in any of the three tournaments. Only at the U18 Junior World Championship was he elected to the tournament's all-star team.
