Petr Nedvěd (born December 9, 1971 in Liberec , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current official with Canadian citizenship. During his active career between 1988 and 2014, he played 1053 games for the Vancouver Canucks , St. Louis Blues , New York Rangers , Pittsburgh Penguins , Edmonton Oilers , Phoenix Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League on the position of the center has denied. In the course of his long career he was also active for Bílí Tygři Liberec and HC Sparta Prague in the Czech extra league, in which he played over 400 other games. Nedvěd, who was selected in second overall position in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics . He has been the general manager of the Czech national ice hockey team since June 2018 .
Career
Nedvěd played up to the age of 17 in his Czechoslovak homeland in the youth department of the CHZ Litvínov , where his father had played himself for eight years. At an international junior tournament in Calgary, Canada at the beginning of 1989, he used the opportunity and pulled away from the team.
After his escape, Nedvěd played the 1989/90 season with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Western Hockey League . With 145 points in 71 games he was named Rookie of the Year of the Western Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League , which led to his being selected in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft in second overall position by the Vancouver Canucks and an NHL contract for the 1990/91 season .
Despite the advance praise, the native Czech was unable to meet the demands in his first two professional seasons and only scored 53 points in 138 games. It was not until the 1992/93 season that he achieved his breakthrough with 71 points in 84 games. Due to disagreements regarding his contract between him and the management of the Canucks, Nedvěd's NHL career was put on hold for the time being. He then joined the Canadian national team , having recently received Canadian citizenship. So he was appointed to the squad for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . Together with Paul Kariya he led the team to the finals of the Olympic hockey tournament , where the to Sweden to Peter Forsberg was beaten and finally was able to win the silver medal. In March 1994 he moved to the St. Louis Blues as a free agent , for which he only completed 19 games, but scored 20 points. As compensation for the loss, the Canucks had received Craig Janney , who was immediately brought back for a player package. After only five months in St. Louis, Nedvěd changed to reigning Stanley Cup winner New York Rangers for Esa Tikkanen and Doug Lidster . The 1994/95 season , which was shortened by the lockout , turned out to be a disappointment for the striker, whereupon he was given up to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the summer of 1995 together with Sergei Subow for Luc Robitaille and Ulf Samuelsson . There Nedvěd set career records in his first year with 45 goals and 99 points and after the season he represented his home country Czech Republic at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey . This was possible because the World Cup was not organized by the IIHF , in whose tournaments he was not allowed to play.
After another solid season with the Penguins, Nedvěd missed the entire NHL season 1997/98 due to a renewed contract dispute. He therefore returned to the Czech Republic and played a few games for HC Sparta Prague in the Czech Extra League . After he was transferred to the New York Rangers in November 1998 together with Chris Tamer and Sean Pronger in exchange for Alexei Kowaljow and Harry York , he ran again for the team from the " Big Apple " . In contrast to his first stint with Rangers, the six seasons in New York through 2004 were the most consistent of his entire NHL career. However, when the Rangers were on their way again in March 2004 to miss the playoffs and the center had disappointed with its performances over the entire season, it was handed over to the Edmonton Oilers .
Due to the renewed lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , Nedvěd moved back to HC Sparta Prague, although he had signed a contract with the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent before the season . He came to his first games for the Coyotes in the 2005/06 season . However, since he could no longer call up the performance potential of previous years and was far away from his wife Veronika Vařeková , who was married in 2004 and worked in New York, he asked in January 2006 for a transfer to a team on the east coast. For Dennis Seidenberg he was finally given to the Philadelphia Flyers . There his game did not change either, which culminated in the fact that he was eliminated from the squad in October 2006 after a 9-1 defeat by the Buffalo Sabers and was deported to the American Hockey League for the first time in his career . Dissatisfied with the situation with the farm team , the Philadelphia Phantoms , Nedvěd refused a return to the NHL squad of the Flyers and was selected in January 2007 on the waiver list of the Edmonton Oilers, where he ended the season.
In June 2007 the Czech finally turned his back on the NHL and signed a contract with HC Sparta Prague, for which he had already accrued in the 1997/98 and 2004/05 seasons.
Between 2008 and 2014 he was active for the Bílí Tygři Liberec and was team captain of the White Tigers during this time . In March 2014, he retired at the age of 42 after having participated in the Sochi Winter Olympics a month earlier . He has been the general manager of the Czech national ice hockey team since June 2018 .
