Luc Jean-Marie Robitaille (born February 17, 1966 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current official. The left winger played over 1,500 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Los Angeles Kings , for which he scored over 1,000 points and in which he holds several franchise records. He won the Stanley Cup in 2002 with the Detroit Red Wings and as an official of the Kings in 2012 and 2014, which he now presides over. In addition, he has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eisbären Berlin since February 2017 .
With the Canadian national team Robitaille won the Canada Cup in 1991 and became world champion in 1994 .
Career
As a player
Despite a decent season with the Hull Olympiques in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , the Scouts saw Robitailles running weaknesses rather than possible strengths and so it lasted in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft until the ninth round, in which the Los Angeles Kings won Striker as 171st moved. In the next two years in Hull Robitaille showed what potential he had with 148 and 191 points.
For the 1986/87 season the Los Angeles Kings brought Robitaille to their team and the scouts have now been taught better. In 79 games he scored 45 goals and brought it to 84 points. This earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy for best rookie. In the next seven years in Los Angeles, he should always score more than 40 goals. Year after year he was one of the Kings top scorers. He had his best season in 1992/93 . With 125 points, he set a season record that is still valid today for a left winger. He was also the first to become the top scorer of a team in which Wayne Gretzky played. This season, the Kings made it to the Stanley Cup finals, but failed there against the Montréal Canadiens . For the 1994/95 season , the Kings gave Robitaille in exchange for Rick Tocchet and a draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins .
He stayed in Pittsburgh for only one season before joining the New York Rangers . He stayed here for two seasons before the Kings brought him back to Los Angeles in exchange for Kevin Stevens .
His return was not as triumphant as one might have expected. Handicapped by injuries, he could not build on the great achievements of past days. Only in his second season in 1998/99 could he meet the fans' expectations again. In 2001, as a free agent , his wish to win the Stanley Cup in LA could not be fulfilled, so he tried his luck with the Detroit Red Wings . There he finally achieved his great goal and won the Stanley Cup with them. In the heavily occupied Red Wing offensive, he made a respectable contribution to the championship victory with 30 goals and 20 assists. However, his second season in Detroit was disappointing.
For the third time he came back to Los Angeles for the 2003/04 season and was able to top the Kings' scorer list at the age of 38. After the 2004/05 strike season , he went into another season for the Kings. In this he was able to break Marcel Dionne's old record with 550 goals for the Kings. He played his last game on April 17, 2006 in the HP Pavilion in San Jose, the Kings defeated the Sharks 4-0. Robitaille remained without a scorer point in this game.
Overall, Robitaille scored over 1000 points in the Kings' jersey and is in second place behind Marcel Dionne in their all-time scorer list . With a total of 1394 points, he also took 19th place in the eternal NHL scorer list at the time of his retirement.
On 21 August 2006, the Los Angeles Kings announced that Robitailles number 20 on 20 January 2007 before the game against the Phoenix Coyotes officially in a ceremony closed and the number will therefore be awarded to any player more. He was also honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 .
As a functionary
In May 2007 Robitaille returned to the Kings as a functionary and took over the position of President of Business Operations . In this role he won the Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2012 and 2014; a success that he was denied with the team as a player. Parallel to his work in Los Angeles, the Canadian took on the role of Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Eisbären Berlin in February 2017 - both teams belong to the Anschutz Entertainment Group . With the dismissal of Dean Lombardi in April 2017, Robitaille finally took over the position of President of the Los Angeles Kings.
