Steve James Vickers (born April 21, 1951 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (left winger) who played for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League from 1972 to 1982 .

Career

Vickers played in the OHA with Dale Tallon and Steve Shutt during his junior years at the Toronto Marlboros . In the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft , he was selected by the New York Rangers in the first round as tenth overall.

After a year with the Omaha Knights in the Central Hockey League , he made the jump to the NHL and was from the 1972/73 season in the Rangers roster. In a row with Walt Tkaczuk and Bill Fairbairn , he was able to prevail with his physically robust game. 53 points helped him to win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie of the year .

In the following years he asserted himself as a solid NHL player. He twice took part in the NHL All-Star Game . When his performance waned in the 1981/82 season , he was released to the Springfield Indians in the AHL . At the age of 31 he ended his active career.
