William Plett (born June 7, 1955 in Asunción , Paraguay ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Atlanta Flames , Calgary Flames , Minnesota North Stars and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League during his playing career . The attacking player was considered an enforcer due to his physical style and robustness .

Career

Willi Plett began his career in 1972 with the Niagara Falls Flyers in the Southern Ontario Junior A Hockey League , before joining the St. Catharines Black Hawks ice hockey team in the Ontario Hockey Association in 1975 . In a total of 26 games he reached 16 points and received 105 penalty minutes. Plett was selected in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft by the Atlanta Flames in the fifth round in a total of 80th position. In the 1975/76 season he gained his first experience in the National Hockey League , when he ran up in four games, remained pointless and punished. Almost the entire season, however, the attacking player played in the Central Hockey League with the Tulsa Oilers and quickly established himself as an integral part of the team. In the following season he ran in 67 NHL games for the Flames and collected 57 points scorer. The team qualified for the play-offs and lost in the first round the series against the Los Angeles Kings in three games with 1: 2 and was thus eliminated from the competition. That same year, Plett was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy for best rookie .

In the following three years he achieved a constant number of points, but did not get past the first round with the Flames in the play-offs. In 1980 the franchise moved to Calgary and now appeared as the Calgary Flames . His greatest success with the team came in the 1980/81 season , when the Flames advanced to the third play-off round and were subject to the Minnesota North Stars in six games . This was also his best season in terms of points with a total of 68 points, which he achieved with 38 goals and 30 assists. In 1982, the Calgary-based team sold him in a barter along with a four-round vote to the Minnesota North Stars, in exchange Steve Christoff , Bill Nyrop and a second-round draft pick moved to the Flames. As before during his entire career, Plett was one of the seeded players with the North Stars and set his career record in the 1983/84 season with a total of 367 penalty minutes.

In the same season he reached with the team the entry into the Conference Finals and lost in four games against the Edmonton Oilers to Wayne Gretzky , Jari Kurri , Mark Messier and Paul Coffey . On September 8, 1987, he was transferred to the New York Rangers in exchange for Pat Price , for which he did not play a single game and was released about a month later in the NHL Waiver Draft . The Boston Bruins then secured his services. The Canadian qualified with the Bruins for the finals for the Stanley Cup and lost with the team again against the Edmonton Oilers in four games. Then he ended his active career.
