Steven Mark "Steve" Christoff (born January 23, 1958 in Richfield , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who played for the Minnesota North Stars , Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings in his playing days from 1976 to 1984 National Hockey League has played. He came to great fame as a member of the US national team , which became Olympic champion in 1980 .

Career

Steve Christoff began his career as a hockey player at the University of Minnesota , which he attended from 1976 to 1979, while he was also active for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In the 1977/78 season he was elected to the second All-Star Team of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and then selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 in the second round as the 24th player of the Minnesota North Stars . First, however, he stayed with his university team and led them in the 1978/79 season as an assistant captain, first to win the championship title of the WCHA and then to win the NCAA championship. He spent most of the 1979/80 season with Team USA , which was preparing for the 1980 Winter Olympics. After the Olympic victory in 1980 he joined the Minnesota North Stars and played 34 times in the National Hockey League by the end of the season , scoring 16 goals and providing eleven templates. Also in the following two seasons he was one of the regulars with the North Stars in the NHL. He also completed three parallel games for Minnesota's farm team Oklahoma City Stars in the Central Hockey League in the 1980/81 season and scored one goal. His best point season in the NHL was the 1981/82 season , in which he scored 55 scorer points in 71 games for the Minnesota North Stars, including 26 goals.

On June 7, 1982 Christoff was given together with Bill Nyrop and a second round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 1982 in exchange for Willi Plett and a four round vote for the Entry Draft 1982 to the Calgary Flames . With the Canadians he could not build on his achievements from the previous year and he scored only 17 points scorer in 46 games in the 1982/83 season . Since he could not meet the high expectations in Calgary, he was then initially transferred back to his ex-team from Minnesota, which in turn transferred him to the Los Angeles Kings in October 1983 together with Fred Barrett in exchange for Dave Lewis . Even with the Californians he could not fully assert himself and came in the 1983/84 season in 58 games on eight goals and seven assists. He then ended his active career at the age of 26.

International

For the USA Christoff took part in the 1979 World Cup and the Canada Cup in 1981 . His greatest success with the US national team was winning the gold medal at the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid .
