NHL Entry Draft

The 1982 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 9, 1982 at the Forum de Montréal in Montréal in the Canadian province of Québec . In the 20th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 252 players in twelve rounds. As First Overall Draft Pick the Canadian defender was Gord Kluzak of the Boston Bruins considered. Brian Bellows for the Minnesota North Stars and Gary Nylund for the Toronto Maple Leafs followed in second and third . The order of the draft resulted from the reversed final table of the past season 1981/82 , but with the innovation that the playoff teams were now sorted regardless of their score behind the teams that missed the playoffs. This took into account the fact that the playoff mode had previously been changed and now the top four teams in each division qualified, regardless of the scores of the teams in other divisions.
In the 1982 Entry Draft, a significantly higher number of Americans than in previous years was considered, so that both the high school and college sectors ( NCAA ) provided more players than the third major Canadian junior league, the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). In addition, the NHL teams selected more Czechoslovak and Soviet players in the hope of being able to sign them in the event of a clearance or even a possible fall of the Iron Curtain . Due to a rule change by the NHL, the rights to these actors had to be acquired in the draft before they could have signed a contract directly as a free agent .
A number of well-known players were selected this year beyond the third round, including Ulf Samuelsson , Ray Ferraro , Ron Hextall and the later Hall of Fame member Doug Gilmour . Other important actors are Scott Stevens , Phil Housley and Dave Andreychuk , who are also represented in the Hall of Fame, as well as Ron Sutter , Ken Daneyko , Tomas Sandström , Pat Verbeek and Kevin Dineen .
