Tomas Sandström (born September 4, 1964 in Jakobstad , Finland ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played for the New York Rangers , Los Angeles Kings , Pittsburgh Penguins , Detroit Red Wings and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the National Hockey League from 1984 to 1999 played.
Career
Born in Finland, the son of Finnish-Swedish parents grew up in Sweden. As a junior he played in at Fagersta AIK . The NHL became aware of the talented Sandström early on and so he was selected in the second round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft as 36th by the New York Rangers . He moved to the first division for Brynäs IF and played in his home country at the Junior World Championships in 1984 . He attracted attention through good performances and was nominated for the Swedish national ice hockey team to participate in the Olympic Games in Sarajevo . With his team he achieved the bronze medal.
After playing for Sweden in the 1984 Canada Cup , he moved to the Rangers for the 1984/85 season . A good performance in his first season was rewarded with a call to the All Rookie Team, which this year also included Chris Chelios and Mario Lemieux . During the six years with the Rangers he took part in three world championships. The team did not have much success here in 1985 and 1989 . At the ice hockey world championship in 1987 , however, he was instrumental in the first title win for the Tre Kronor team since 1962. 90 seconds before the end of the game against the Soviet Union, Håkan Loob initiated an attack which he was able to conclude with the equalizer. A surprisingly clear 9-0 win against Canada in the last game secured the title.
In January 1990 he was given together with Tony Granato in exchange for Bernie Nicholls to the Los Angeles Kings , where Wayne Gretzky played at the time . With the Kings he was defeated in the 1992/93 season by the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup final. With 25 points he was the third best scorer in the playoffs and played a big part in the good performance.
For Marty McSorley , among others , he was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 1994 . He stayed there until the end of January 1997 when he was given to the Detroit Red Wings for Greg Johnson . With the Red Wings he only stayed at the end of the season, but that was crowned with winning the Stanley Cup. His last team in the NHL were the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , for which he played for two years. The Swedish team also honored his performance in those years with the nomination for the Olympic Games in Nagano .
In 1999 he ended his career in the NHL and played a few years in Sweden for the Malmö Redhawks .
