Bernard Irvine "Bernie" Nicholls (born June 24, 1961 in Haliburton , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1245 games for the Los Angeles Kings , New York Rangers , Edmonton Oilers , New Jersey Devils , Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks competed in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Nicholls, who took part in the NHL All-Star Game three times , won the silver medal with the Canadian national team at the 1985 World Cup .
Career
After a decent season with the Kingston Canadians , Nicholls was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round as 73rd. He stayed in Kingston for another year in the Ontario Hockey League .
The Kings added him to their roster the following year, but he started the American Hockey League season with the New Haven Nighthawks . There he was able to convince and was brought into the NHL at the end of the season. With 32 points in the remaining 22 games, he made a lasting impression. His first full season in the NHL was not as outstanding as one had hoped, but Nicholls came back to the following season 1983/84 at an excellent level. There were 95 points at the end of the season and in the two following seasons he was able to increase this value again with 100 and 97. The signing of Wayne Gretzky brought Nicholls to another level. In the 1988/89 season he scored 70 goals, a team record that is still valid today. A year earlier, on December 1, 1988, he had an outstanding game with eight scorer points and six assists. But as a center like Gretzky he did not fit into the concept of the Kings and was handed over to the New York Rangers in the course of the following season for the wingers Tony Granato and Tomas Sandström .
Nicholls was also successful as a scorer at the Rangers and achieved an average of more than one scorer point per game. But here too, a former large oiler was the reason for another change at the beginning of the 1991/92 season . The Rangers brought Mark Messier and Nicholls had to join the Edmonton Oilers together with Louie DeBrusk and Steven Rice . In Edmonton they wanted to rebuild the team in the following season and so his journey continued to the New Jersey Devils . The rhythm was maintained and after a year and a half the trip went to Chicago. In his two years playing with the Chicago Blackhawks , he did what was expected of him. He kept his cut of more than one point per game.
As a veteran, the San Jose Sharks signed Bernie Nicholls for the 1996/97 season . After three seasons, Nicholls ended his career at the age of 37.
