The 1981/82 season was the 46th regular season of the American Hockey League (AHL). During the regular season, the eleven teams in the league played 80 games each. The eight best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round for the Calder Cup .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Fredericton Express were added to the league as an expansion team
- The Erie Blades from the Eastern Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team

Calder Cup playoffs
mode
The eight best teams in the AHL qualified for the play-offs. In the South Division, the fifth Adirondack Red Wings qualified, as this reached more points in the regular season than the fourth in the North Division, the Springfield Indians. In the first two play-off rounds, the winners of the respective divisions were played. In round three, the two division winners met in the final. The first play-off round was played in the best-of-five mode, the second play-off round and the final were played in the best-of-seven mode.
