The 1940/41 season was the fifth regular season of the American Hockey League (AHL). During the regular season, the league's nine teams played 56 games each. The six best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round for the Calder Cup .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Syracuse Stars were relocated to Buffalo , New York , and from then on played under the name Buffalo Bisons

Calder Cup playoffs
mode
The six best teams in the American Hockey League qualified for the play-offs. The two winners from the duels between the teams in places two to four met in the second round, while the winner from the duel between the two division winners was automatically qualified for the final by a bye . The first two play-off rounds took place in the best-of-three mode, with the two division winners playing for the finals in the best-of-five mode. The final itself was also played in the best-of-five mode.
