history

Originally established as Cleveland Indians in 1929 , the Barons were called Cleveland Falcons between 1934 and 1937 , but were renamed Barons in 1937. They had their most successful years between 1939 and 1957, in which they won the Calder Cup nine times (1939, 1941, 1945, 1948, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1957 and 1964) and reached the final four more times in which they lost ( 1944, 1946, 1950 and 1956). In the following 15 years they only reached the final twice, which they won in 1964 and lost two years later.

The outstanding star of the franchise was Fred Glover , who leads the team records in the categories of games, goals, assists, penalty minutes and seasons played and is second in the league. The Hall of Famer also played Johnny Bower , who was active with the Barons for nine years before his NHL career and is still the goalkeeper with the most shutouts in the AHL. The then general manager of the Barons Jim Hendy encouraged Bower to move to the NHL. Other famous players in Barons history were Les Cunningham , who has been named a league All-Star five times and after whom the trophy for the AHL MVP is named, Jack Gordon , Bill Needham , the player with the most games for the team in their history, Cal Sterns , Fred Thurier and Les Binkley .

When a WHA ( Cleveland Crusaders ) team was installed in Cleveland in 1972 , public interest waned and the then owner of the team, Nick Mileti , decided to move the Barons to Jacksonville , Florida during the current season in February 1973 , where it was played until 1974 and twice missed the playoffs. The franchise was then dissolved.
