history
After the 1939/40 season, the Syracuse Stars were bought by businessman Louis M. Jacobs and relocated to Buffalo , New York , where they played as Buffalo Bisons in the American Hockey League from the 1940/41 season . After the bisons missed the playoffs in their first two AHL seasons, they won the prestigious Calder Cup in 1943 and 1944 respectively . After the first round from 1945 Buffalo managed to win the Calder Cup for the third time in franchise history in 1946 when they narrowly prevailed with 4-3 wins against the Cleveland Barons . After this success, it was not until 1963 that the Buffalo Bisons could win the Calder Cup again. Previously they failed in the finals in 1948, 1955, 1959 and 1962.
In the 1969/70 season, the bison won the Calder Cup for the fifth and last time with a sweep in the best-of-seven series against the Springfield Kings . After the season, the game was stopped after 30 years, because with the Buffalo Sabers for the 1970/71 season, a team from Buffalo was included in the National Hockey League for the first time . With five wins and four defeats in the final, the Buffalo Bisons were one of the most successful franchises in AHL history.
