The Buffalo Memorial Auditorium (short: The Aud ) was a multi-purpose hall in the US city ​​of Buffalo , New York State , which was in operation between 1940 and 1996.

history

The hall was designed by Edward Brodhead Green and from 30 November 1939, 2.7 million US dollars built. The arena was opened on October 14, 1940. It was renovated in 1970 and 1990. It was the home of various basketball , volleyball , ice hockey and soccer teams; including the Buffalo Sabers and the Buffalo Braves . Tennis and wrestling competitions were also held there. The arena had a capacity of 14,337 spectators and was closed in 1996. It stood empty for 13 years and fell into disrepair until it was blown up in 2009.

In addition to sporting events, the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium was also used for concerts. Nationally and internationally successful artists and bands such as AC / DC , Bill Haley & His Comets , Bo Diddley , Duke Ellington , Elvis Presley , Frank Sinatra , Grateful Dead , Led Zeppelin , Neil Young & Crazy Horse , Prince , Ray Charles , The Jacksons , The Rolling Stones and The Who . Frank Zappa recorded his ( posthumously released) album Buffalo there in 1980 .
