The Carolina Monarchs were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Greensboro , North Carolina . The venue for the monarchs was the Greensboro Coliseum .

history

The Carolina Monarchs were founded in 1995 as a franchise for the American Hockey League . In the two seasons in which the Monarchs were active in the AHL, they each missed the playoffs, reaching 70 points in the first season and only 65 points in the second. In 1997 the Hartford Whalers from the National Hockey League were relocated to Greensboro under the name Carolina Hurricanes , whereupon the new Hurricanes organization bought the franchise of the Carolina Monarchs and relocated to New Haven , Connecticut , under the name Beast of New Haven .

Previously, the Greensboro Monarchs from the East Coast Hockey League (1989-1995) played in Greensboro . The void left by the resettlement of the Carolina Monarchs was filled by the Carolina Hurricanes and the Greensboro Generals from the ECHL (1999-2004).
