The Greensboro Coliseum is a multi-purpose arena in Greensboro , North Carolina . The Coliseum is part of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex . The hall was home to the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League from 1997 to 1999 and the 1974 NCAA Basketball Final Four venue . The arena opened as the War Memorial Coliseum in 1959 and was renamed Greensboro Coliseum in the late 1960s.

As one of the largest arenas in the south, the stadium initially held 9,200 spectators, but over the years the capacity has increased to 15,000. After extensive renovations in 1993, the stadium can now accommodate 21,273 people for ice hockey games and 23,500 for basketball games. The complex includes a 180,000 m 2 event center, a pavilion and the 2,300-seat “War Memorial Auditorium”.

ice Hockey

Ice hockey history at Greensboro Coliseum began with the arena opening in 1959, from when the Greensboro Generals of the Eastern Hockey League played their games until the league closed in 1973. The team moved to the Southern Hockey League for four years , until this league also stopped playing. More modern ice hockey history begins with the Greensboro Monarchs , who played their home games in the East Coast Hockey League at Greensboro Coliseum from 1989 to 1995 . When the American Hockey League finally expanded south in 1995, the franchise became the Carolina Monarchs . After the Hartford Whalers moved to North Carolina in 1997, the team, renamed Carolina Hurricanes , played for two seasons in Greensboro until the new RBC Center in Raleigh was completed . However, since the Hurricanes only played as a temporary solution in the Coliseum, the audience participation remained correspondingly low in the two years.

After the Carolina Hurricanes had moved to Raleigh, there were plans to bring the monarchs , now settled in New Haven , Connecticut, back to Greensboro as Beasts of New Haven . However, these plans failed, so that the Greensboro Generals started a new team in the East Coast Hockey League. However, as the franchise lacked class and spectators, the team was withdrawn from the ECHL in 2004.

basketball

The Carolina Cougars of the American Basketball Association played some of their games at Greensboro Coliseum during their time in North Carolina from 1969 to 1974 before they were relocated to St. Louis and became the Spirits of St. Louis . In addition, numerous college baseball tournaments were held in the arena, including 20 tournaments of the Atlantic Coast Conference , the NCAA Basketball Final Four 1974 and various regional tournaments .

From 1959 to 1989 the "Demon Deacons", the basketball team of Wake Forest University , also played their important home games at Greensboro Coliseum.

Arena football

The first arena football team to play in the arena were the Greensboro Prowlers from af2 , the second highest professional game class in North America, who were based at Greensboro Coliseum from 1999 to 2004. With the Greensboro Revolution , an arena football team, this time from the National Indoor Football League , started playing again in 2006 , but this was discontinued after a short time.

other events

In the Greensboro Coliseum, many other events have also taken place over the years, such as monster truck races, wrestling events and concerts.
